Assignment 9-Elizabeth Ueland

"Absolutely, Nothing!"
The quote, “all is fair in love and war,” says that typical rules don’t apply to times of war or love. If soldiers aren’t bound to typical rules does that mean it was acceptable for Hitler to exterminate thousands of Jews? Or for someone to commit a murder driven by love? Of course these acts aren’t acceptable normally, but how does the condition of love or war make this okay? On the other hand, many people think that war is avoidable and unnecessary in order to achieve peace.

Strongly believed by peacemakers like Nelson Mandela-there are always alternatives to war and violence. A 10-year-old schoolgirl named Samantha Smith helped end the Cold War by simply writing a letter. War is not the only option to reach peace. The killing of innocent individuals as a means of reaching power is not acceptable. If the blood shed of everyday people can be avoided, it should be at all costs. Constructing treaties or negotiating with other countries is a simple way in avoiding war and is often done today. However, many wars between people, religions, and countries persist today in spite of the harsh consequences we, as people, have endured and continue to endure.
