On
September 16th, 1810 Mexico issued the Grito de Dolores, calling for the end of
Spanish rule in Mexico. This day is officially known as Mexican Independence
day today. It all started when Dolores Hidalgo planned a revolt against the
Spanish colonial government and several of the rebels were killed. Hidalgo then
went for the prisons and set 80 pro-independence rebels free. The country
celebrates this day as Independence Day instead of September 28th,
1821, when Spain officially declared Mexico as independent; similar to
America’s independence date versus the actual one in 1783. Today in Mexico, the
celebrations include mariachi bands playing the national anthem all through the
country, parades, and the president rings the “Independence Bell” at midnight.
I believe
this was very significant because it created a new country. Since then, the
Mexican culture has proven to be very unique to the area and they have
influenced international affairs.
