Traditions, by one definition are, “cultural continuity in
social attitudes, customs, and institutions.” The fact of the matter for my
family is that our tradition for some holidays is that we rotate where we go
from year to year. For example, for the Fourth of July, we have gone to see my
Mom’s family in Richmond and watched the fireworks at Lake Reba, and we have
gone to Louisville to visit my Dad’s family and done our own fireworks (when
the big ones were legal). We rotate for Thanksgiving too-usually whoever is
hosting makes the turkey, and everyone else brings some food. Sure, my
grandmother is a good, actually great cook, but cooking 10 different things, no
matter your age is no easy task. However, for Easter and Christmas we always
celebrate with my mom’s family at my grandparents’ house. We go later in the
day, eat dinner, play pool, and open presents. Regardless of who we celebrate
holidays with, it’s always nice to be with family, especially those who we don’t
see often.
