Greta Friedman, the woman believed to be the young nurse in the iconic V-J Day photo, has recently died, provoking my interest. After a few minutes of research, I have found that Friedman is not the only woman who claimed to be the subject in the photo. Since facial recognition from the photo is impossible and the sailor had kissed many women along the street in the same manner, it is impossible to know the truth. Nonetheless, the photo represents a great celebratory time in American history because Japan had finally surrendered in World War II, effectively ending the war, bringing the young men off of the battle field and back in the States. The young sailor in the photo had been running through Time's Square kissing all of the women he could get his hands in his post-war celebration because the war was stressful and a huge weight was lifted off of Americans when it ended. This picture speaks volumes of the stress and involvement of America in World War II, not only because of the massive celebration, but because of the impact it still has on Americans seventy one years after the war.
