Assignment 4- Nick Joseph

Undoubtedly, a picture is worth more than a thousand words.  It may sound cliché, but it is a saying that has held the test of time.  Whether World War I photos or an image of our current President, pictures bring people together.  They unite them, and often give all viewers a particular feeling and/or emotion.  One example of this is the following picture of Muhammad Ali.  While this picture may, at first glance, seem unimportant or non-influential, upon closer examination, it united the American people.  In this photo, Ali is standing over Sonny Liston, a boxer well-known for his grit and pure strength.  Now Ali was a good boxer, but Liston was expected to at least give him a run for his money.  As it turns out, Ali would go on to knock Sonny out in the first round.  This is rare all together, but especially for two boxers of somewhat equal skill.  In the photo, Ali is clearly very happy and I think it is safe to assume Liston is the opposite.  Outside of the frame of the photo, however, the crowd is all very excited that Ali won with such ease.  Everyone is rallying behind their American boy from Louisville, Ky.  To Americans, Muhammad Ali represented an average fellow with above average determination.  He brought people together through his dedication, and encouraged the to take their own risks.
