Assingment 4- Emma Tucker

Nov. 22, 1963 — Lyndon B. Johnson is sworn in as president of the United States

Presidential inaugurations are typically full of excitement and celebration of the new face who is now calling the White House their home. However, this is not the case for the inauguration in this photo. This is the moment when Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as president on Air Force One right after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The most notable part of this picture is Kennedy's wife Jackie standing right beside Johnson, still wearing the clothes stained with her husband's blood. While still comprehending the loss of her husband, she stands by the person that has to step into his place. From the sorrowful expressions across every face, this picture very clearly shows the mournful nature of not just the people on the plane, but the entire country. However, in the midst of the tragic event, this picture also represents something else.
It represents America to the core. It shows that even when a distressing event occurs, and takes the leader of our country, we keep moving. It shows that as a country, America is strong, and in the midst of chaos there is a plan. The assassination of JFK is a moment that will forever be imprinted as a harrowing moment in our history. However, this picture proved to the distraught citizens at the time, and to people today, that no matter what happens, America can and will rise above and continue to be the greatest nation in the world.
