Assignment 20 - Dylan Spradlin

How to: Shoot a Free Throw

This "how to" is dedicated to Kentucky basketball, because as a dedicated Cats fan, UK obviously needs help and practice on shooting free throws.

Step 1: Get the perfect stance by standing at the free throw line, with your feet shoulder length apart, facing the center of the rim.
Step 2: Hold the ball in both hands, with your dominant hand on the backside of the ball and your non-dominant hand on the side of the ball.
Step 3: Bend your knees slightly, and visualize the image of a perfect shot going through the net and the unmistakeable sound of the ball hitting nothing but net.
Step 4: Once you bend your knees, raise the ball up over your head, just in front of your forehead.
Step 5: Make the shape of a L with your arm, keeping your elbows in tight to your body while shooting.
Step 6: Aim for the square on the backboard above the net.
Step 7 (Optional): Take a couple of dribbles, and take some practice air shots without the ball to perfect your form.
Step 8: Clear your mind of all outside thoughts, and focus on the simple task at hand.
Step 9: Shoot the ball by pushing upwards with your dominant hand, keeping your other hand on the side of the ball for support.
Step 10: Follow through with both hands pointing towards the basket after you release the ball.
Step 11: Practice!
